McGee & Co. Guide to Wallpaper

Confidently choose your perfect wallpaper with our comprehensive guide to print types, patterns, expert tips, and essential insights.

Wallpaper Print Types & Techniques

From vintage-inspired floral motifs to sleek and sophisticated patterns, our wallpapers are made with nuanced printing techniques that bring life to the walls of your home.

Gravure Printed

Gravure printing uses engraved steel rollers and ink to transfer a design to the wallpaper material. This is an efficient technique that achieves varied color tones and details. Typically, it can feature up to six colors.

Surface Printed

Surface printing uses a machine that moves the wallpaper across a large central roller to transfer an image to the paper. This rare technique is characterized by thick ink that appears to be painted and is mostly used in vintage-inspired prints.

Digitally Printed

Digital printing uses an inkjet printer to transfer a high-quality image or design to the wallpaper with accuracy. This is the most cost-effective and versatile printing technique.

Ordering and Installation

Order Free Swatches

When selecting the wallpaper you would like for your home, we recommend first viewing the styled images to help visualize the pattern’s scale. Then, order a swatch of the wallpaper to test the color palette in your home and to see the wallpaper in different lighting conditions.

Determine Roll Count

Before ordering your wallpaper, measure your wall space to determine how many rolls you need. To do so, combine the width of each wall, then multiply that number by the ceiling height. Finally, divide this number by the square footage of one roll.

Installation

We recommend professional installation of the wallpaper for seamless results.

Wallpaper Cleaning & Care

Extend the life and beauty of your wall coverings with our tips on cleaning and care. Our wallpaper is non-washable, yet it can be dusted or gently wiped with a soft cloth. While some resources suggest using a damp cloth with mild soap, we advise caution—especially with textured or relief surfaces—as consistent cleaning may cause damage over time.

Selecting Prints, Patterns, and Colors

What to consider when selecting a new wallpaper style for your space.

Tip 1 Consider Pattern Scale.jpg

TIP 01

Consider Pattern Scale and Room Size

In large spaces, a small-scale pattern may feel overwhelming. Likewise, a large-scale pattern may be lost in a small space. As a general rule, incorporate large patterns into expansive spaces and small patterns into tight spaces.

TIP 02

Order a Sample

Small design details may be lost online or difficult to gauge without seeing them in your space. Order a sample to understand if the color, pattern, or accent features work in your home.

TIP 03

Evaluate Every Angle

Consider if the wallpaper is visible from other rooms. If so, evaluate how the pattern and color relate to the finishes and furniture in the adjacent rooms.

TIP 04

Use Wallpaper to Establish a Palette

Wallpaper can create a cohesive color palette for the entire home. If you already have an established palette, choose a wallpaper that complements existing tones. Alternatively, find a wallpaper palette you love and use it as the starting point for expanding color into other rooms of the home.
Embrace Pattern Mixing.jpg

TIP 05

Embrace Pattern Mixing

To mix and match patterns throughout the home, balance large and small-scale patterns and use a combination of florals, solids, stripes, and geometric prints.

TIP 06

Consider the Effects of Lighting

Lighting greatly impacts the look and feel of wallpaper (yet another reason to order a sample!). Use this to your advantage and choose wallpaper that makes the space feel either more moody or bright. If your space doesn’t have much natural lighting, consider the background tone of the wallpaper the same way you would paint. Wallpaper tones will reinforce the mood you are curating.
Commit to Your Decision.jpg

TIP 07

Commit to Your Decision

After exploring your specific space and ordering wallpaper samples, it’s time to commit. Wallpaper is an investment of time, money, and labor, so choose a timeless pattern that you’ll love living with for a long time.

Wallpaper in Unexpected Spaces

How to effectively use wallpaper throughout the home.

Treat Ceilings

Wallpapering the ceiling brings cohesive pattern to a room while allowing you to keep the adjoining walls neutral. This is a great way to ease into pattern mixing.

Add to Built-ins

If you find wallpaper you love but aren't interested in treating an entire room, install the wallpaper to the back of your built-ins or behind a wall of shelves as an art statement.

Use in Formal Sitting Rooms

Set the tone of formal seating areas or living rooms with wallpaper. This creates an inviting feel that is either bright or moody, depending on the pattern and palette you select.

Add to Kids Rooms

Incorporating wall treatments into a kid’s room is a wonderful way to express their personality. Find something that can grow with them throughout their childhood, then consider an update.
